It had been Cardinal Ximenes who had summoned her to the court of
Queen Isabella, and in the castle's sprawling courtyard, the two
had walked for hours in silence. The Cardinal had motioned her to
sit on a bench between two massive flowering trees, and after several
minutes of silence, he had given her a short speech.
"I have watched you since you were a novice at the abbey and have found that your discipline rivals that of many Dominicans, so I realize that my words will carry the weight necessary to keep you in silence. I will never speak of this again. Yours is to labor." Maria nodded. "I do not agree with Torquemada and the others, but I am compelled to silence. Still, I have from His Eminence the power to collect knowledge, and that I will do through you. There is a creature rotting in Ferdinand's dungeon. You will learn all you can from it. Do not let fear claim you; there is no blasphemy in what you do. Indeed, the Lord will be pleased with your labor." The labor that Sister Maria is about to undertake will change the course of her destiny, for the creature whose life she is to chronicle is a ghul, "a descedant of the first Madonna." Sister Maria must bring all of her strength and discipline to bear if she is to resist the power of this creature's cunning and persuasive philosophy. Folio of Edicts by Octavio Ramos, Jr. is the atmospheric story of her struggle between duty and desire, and the effects on her life. Immerse yourself in this world of the virtuous and the vile, where life heaps its hardships upon the living and the undead. This chapbook is beautifully illustrated by Margaret Ballif Simon. | ||||||||||
