Manuscript submission totals for
January 2003:
Poetry: 121
Prose: 14
Acceptances in January 2003:
Poetry: 2
Prose: 1
This month the rejections far outweighed
the acceptances. Among the few exceptions were:
- "caught myself" will be published in an upcoming issue of the
literary magazine Free Verse
- Umbriate selected the poem "her motives" for publication
- My short story "The Abomination of Ialuyghaag" will be appearing
in a future issue of Elsewhen
I received my copies of An Invisible
Shimmer this month. An Invisible Shimmer is my first
chapbook of poetry, published by Anxiety Publications. You can
purchase it at ProjectPulp.com.
Following is a list of recent
acquisitions for my ever-expanding library:
- The Rainbow Around the Tomb
Published by John E. Potter, 1864; A collection of poetry and prose
on the subject of death and grieving.
Paid: $5.00
- Tales of Edgar Allan Poe
Yet another addition to the Poe shelf. This is a nice Whitman
hardback published in 1965, with illustrations by Ati Forberg. Found
at a thrift store in good condition.
Paid: $0.50
- The Works of Washington Irving
The Co-Operative Publication Society, undated (early 20th Century);
A nice set, if only I had the whole set. I already had a number of
volumes from a previous purchase when I ran across ten more in a thrift
store. I hoped that by combining the two incomplete sets, I'd create
a complete one -- but the book gods were toying with me. Now I have
two matching incomplete sets, and I'm no closer to having a complete
one!
- False Dawn; Blood Games; The Palace | Chelsea Quinn Yarbro
The first from Doubleday, the others St. Martin's Press; hardcover
with dustjacket, good condition.
- Memnoch the Devil & Taltos | Anne Rice
Alfred A. Knopf, publishers; Found at a thrift store in Tarpon Springs.
Paid: $1.00 each
- Louisa the Poisoner | Tanith Lee
Wildside Press, illustrated by George Barr; Hardback with dustjacket.
Near fine copy, a surprising item to find on the shelves of a
paperback bookstore.
Paid: $7.95
- The Odyssey | Homer
Published by Collier as part of the Harvard Classics series, top
page edge gilded. Yet another thrift store find.
Paid: $0.75
- Henry Esmond | William Makepeace Thackeray
Published by Belford, Clarke, and Co.; A Caxton Edition, 1890s.
Very good condition, great book binding by the publisher.
- Wuthering Heights & Jane Eyre | Emily Bronte & Charlotte Bronte
Picked both of these up in the same month -- a "rare and beautiful
two book set" (as described by a bookseller on the internet) from
1943. Each volume includes wood engravings by Fritz Eichenberg.
Published by Random House. The amazing thing about this set: I
found one at an antique show in Pinellas Park; I found the other
several days later (mind you, I didn't know it was a set at the time)
in a library book store.
Paid: $18.00 ($15.00 for the first, $3.00 for the second)
The following magazines also joined the
collection during the month of January:
- Weird Tales #290
- Weird Tales #296

- Electric Velocipede #1
